Teaser Tuesday – April 10, 2019 – A Million Worlds With You by Claudia Gray

Hello, and welcome once again to Teaser Tuesday.

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too.

I did this meme for a couple of months back in 2015 when it had an entirely different host. I’ve decided that starting this month, I’m going to try to get more involved in the bookish community, and I’ve got a few memes to participate in.  I look forward to getting to know you all better!

Today’s teaser is from page 1 of A Million Worlds With You by Claudia  Gray. This is the third book in the Firebird series, which I have been reading over the past few weeks and really enjoying. I have only just started this one and didn’t want to flip too far in and spoil myself, and you have to admit, this is a pretty gripping opening paragraph.

“I can’t breathe. I can’t think. All I can do is hang onto this cable and stare down at the river at least four hundred feet below me.”

Today’s teaser is from page 13 of Amelia Westlake by Erin Gough. I have only just started this, but the two POV characters have completely distinct voices and are obviously complete opposites, so it’ll be interesting to see how they work together.

“Swearing at Coach Hadley. Why did you do that?” she asks Will and not in the weary, slightly cross way she usually asks questions, but more like she is genuinely interested. Her prescription painkillers must be kicking in.

goneawaycoverI’m sharing from Nick Harkaway’s The Gone Away World once again. I read this section today at work and it made me grin.

In the normal run of things, I am Gonzo’s plan-confidant. It is to me he brings his worst ideas, and it is my job to squash them and propose, as an alternative to connecting an electric torch directly to the mains power so as to make a lightsabre, some activity less mortally perilous.  – pg 40

I’m cheating a little today, and using two single sentences from different pages. Because I really liked them both.

goneawaycover1. I thought about my personal view of heaven, which is small and calm and features only one angel, who cannot sing. – pg. 11

2. Ma Lubitsch, watching from a small distance, recognises by the instinctual knowledges of an expat Polish mother that her family has grown by one, and is not perturbed. – pg. 30

Here is the GoodReads page for more info.

I have to admit, this is not really the type of book I would usually read, and it’s going to be quite a slow read. But if it has more beautiful lines like that, I can cope with that.

hollowboycoverThe new Lockwood & Co. book came out today! That link goes to the series page on GoodReads, and you can read my reviews of the first two books here and here. I had the new one pre-ordered on Amazon, so I was able to start it on my break today. Here’s the teaser:

Remember I said there was that moment of sweet precision, when we jelled perfectly as a team? Yeah, well, this wasn’t it.

At the moment that this remark is made, Lockwood is dangling out a window with his coat on fire, George is dangling from a ladder and Lucy (the narrator) has lost her sword down a trap door and is trying to avoid ghost-tentacles. And it’s only chapter three! Things often go awry like this for Lockwood & Co but they always manage to get the job done anyhow.

You would think that I would have finished less-than-400-page book in a week, but the truth is, I didn’t get a huge amount of reading done over the past week, so I’m still in the middle of A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab. It has quite a slow pace, but that works for the story. I’m really loving the world building, and I think I’m actually getting rather attached to the main character, Kell.

darkshadecoversmallLila gave him a derisive glare and fondled the stone. “Oh, no,” she said. “I’m just getting started.”

Technically three sentences, but I’m counting the dialogue all as one. 😛

Last night I started A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab, and I was so taken with the first two sentences of the book that they are what I am sharing with you today.

darkshadecoversmallKell wore a very peculiar coat.

It had neither one side, which would be conventional, or two, which would be unexpected, but several, which was, of course, impossible.

Here is the GoodReads page, if what you read here intrigues you and you want to find out more.

This week I’m sharing from The Viper and the Urchin by Celine Jeanjean. Which… I probably will have finished by the time this is actually posted, but I’m scheduling this on Sunday, and I’m still at 80%. You should all read it. It’s one of my favourite books this year.

vipercoversmall“You got any better ideas?”

“No, and that’s what worries me.”

It took me a few attempts to pick out a sufficiently non-spoileriffic two sentences, but I think this is snappy yet suitably vague.

The Inaugural keysandopenmind Teaser Tuesday

The reason I don’t have a particularly rigorous blogging schedule is because I simply do not have time for writing many posts in a week. It’s time consuming. I tend to write a lot. Usually when I should be doing uni work or otherwise working on more important projects.  But I found this meme, and it’s pretty quick and easy, so I figured I would join in.

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of A Daily Rhythm.

  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

dustgirlcoversmallI’m currently reading Dust Girl by Sarah Zettell (amongst other things; I happened to be able to reach this one without getting up). Here’s the teaser, from page 34:

The clock on the mantel said it was only just going on eleven. But cooking us up lunch would mean I could think about something besides the storm and Mama being gone.”

Join in by adding your link over at MizB’s post.

I’ll see you all tomorrow, all being well.
