February 2017 TBR

I don’t do regular monthly TBR posts, but I do when I feel the list of things I’m supposed to be reading RIGHT NOW start to get out of hand. Like it is at the moment. My NetGalley shelf may not be as out of control as some (I’ve only got three pending and I usually try to keep it around that level; I like my 80% ratio!), but I’ve also got a few books on the go at once and I have got a bit enthusiastic about putting things on hold at the library.

So I’m making this handy-dandy list to consult in the hopes that will let me keep track of things.

ARCs aka Main Priority this month:

ARCs! Because it’s been a while since I read any, and now the publication dates for my pending ones are coming up fast.

First up is Traitor to the Throne by Alwyn Hamilton, the sequel to Rebel of the Sands, which I reviewed last year. which I was lucky enough to be approved for via NetGalley. I honestly didn’t think I would, but it seems Faber & Faber are pretty chill about approvals. This will be published on the Thursday, so I really want to make sure I have a review up as close to that time as possible, since this is a highly anticipated release. I do have the issue of not really remembering how the first book went down, but I’m hoping there will be a few “Previously on…” type sections to jog my memory.

Next up is a book released on February 7, The Mesmerist by Ronald L. Smith. I had actually entirely forgotten wishing for this on NetGalley, and only this morning got an email informing me that my wish had been granted, at which point I had to madly edit this post before it went live, haha. Now that I’ve refreshed my memory of it, though, I’m looking forward to it; it sounds really cute!

After that, will be The Fearless Traveler’s Guide to Wicked Places by Peter Begler, which is released on March 1. I’ve had this sitting around for ages but was waiting until the publication date got a bit closer to read it. Now that date is sneaking up, so I want to make sure I get my review up in time.

After that, I really must read The Devil’s Prayer by Luke Gracias. While I did receive this from NetGalley only recently, it was actually published last August. Not having a release date deadline for a review has meant I’ve been distracted from it. I have been reading it a little on my phone, and I’m quite impressed with the writing so far, so it really is time for me knuckle down and read it properly.

I started Heart of Brass by Felicity Banks a few weeks ago, but it didn’t really grab me and I ended up setting it aside for some library books. My relationship with steampunk does tend to be quite hit or miss, so this is not a huge surprise, but I was hoping to enjoy this one as it was set in Australia. Still, I do want to finish it and review it for the Australian Women Writers Challenge.

Library Books

I finished Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan yesterday, and knowing that it was going to end on a cliffhanger, I placed a hold on Untold, the second book in the Lynburn Legacy series in order to have it in plenty of time. If I continue enjoying the series, I’ll also head onto the third book, Unmade, this month, if I can.

I’m also first in the queue for Adverbs by Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket when he’s writing children’s fiction), which is due back to the library on February 8. This is adult fiction, a short story anthology about love and relationships written in that dark, black humour style that Handler is known for. I’m quite looking forward to reading this.

On the subject of Lemony Snicket, I do also have The Reptile Room, book two in the Series of Unfortunate Events from the library. If the first book is any indication, an hour or so on the couch should see this one polished off. Then I can watch the next two episodes of the Netflix series. Since I’m in no rush to devour the episodes, I decided to watch each set of them after reading the book.

Yikes, I’m looking back at this and thinking that somewhere between five and eight books is definitely plenty enough to be aiming for. All my regular activities like studying for my Masters and rehearsing for musicals start back again in February, not to mention I’m looking into the possibility of some volunteer work on top of all that. So yeah. This will definitely do.
