Happy Star Wars Day!

(I’m not actually even a Star Wars fan, really, but that is beside the point)

It’s also Wednesday, which means WWW Wednesday! This is a blog hop in which we answer questions about what we’ve been reading this past week. This is hosted by Sam over at A World of Words. You can join in by commenting on today’s post over on her blog.

  • What are you currently reading?

A Gathering of Shadows FinalI’ve read a little more of The Edge of Darkness by K. L. Schwengel but really do need to commit to this properly again. Unfortunately, that might not happen until I have got through my pile of library books.

I started A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab after feeling so dissatisfied with The Raven King (more on that below). I needed a strong urban fantasy that actually would live up to my expectations.

Having said all of that, my life got overtaken by uni this week as I had a report worth 40% of my grade due today, so I haven’t been reading very much. When I stopped writing each night I was more likely to go to Netflix than my book, just because the attention required was far less. (Related: everyone should watch Call the Midwife)

  • What did you recently finish reading?

ravenkingcoverI finished The Raven King, and asadfjkh, I was really disappointed! If it had been its own book, it probably would have been fine, but as the fourth and final book in a series, it really needed to ramp up the epicness a lot.

My reviews of the Blue Lily, Lily Blue (Book 3) and The Raven King both went up this week.

  • What do you think you’ll read next?

Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch is due back to the library in a week (damn these popular books with their loan period of only two weeks!), so I’m probably going to need to put my ebooks aside for a bit and read that. I still have some uni work to complete, but I’m hoping some solid work on the weekends will pretty much see me through that. This semester has been a bit of a struggle; I’ll be glad to see the back of it.

For now, I think it’s time to pop on another episode of Call the Midwife. See you all later!~ Emily

I don’t know if you clicked my review or not, but I said in there that it really added to my disappointment that I’d been recommending the series far and wide and would have to now add the caveat that it didn’t end well. Having said that, the number of five star reviews is rather overwhelming, so there must still be plenty to like that just didn’t do it for me.

I love my library but the lending periods just aren’t long enough. I was really bad this week and returned a book late so I could finish it. I figure I’m supporting them financially through fines so it’s all good 🙂

Sorry to hear The Raven King was a disappointment. I hate it when the last book in a series is a bit of a let down. It somehow taints all of the others.

So far, it’s just you and I who were underwhelmed by The Raven King. All the other reviews I’ve seen have been 5-star. I’m glad I’m not alone! It wasn’t bad but, as you say, I think a concluding volume to any series should give us more.

I really hope you enjoy A Gathering of Shadows and Rivers of London. Two very good books, although AGOS does suffer slightly from middle trilogy book syndrome. However, on the bright side, you can already tell that A Conjuring of Light is going to be epic and not disappointing at all! 🙂 Time well invested.

Thanks for visiting my WWW (https://clairehuston.wordpress.com/2016/05/04/www-wednesday-4th-may-2016/) and happy reading!

What do you think of A Gathering of Shadows? I started the series when it was everywhere on social media and it couldn’t quite live up to my expectations, but I did enjoy it! It’s hard to live up to everyone praising it as the best thing ever, but I do see why people love it so much!

I’ve been hearing about how disappointing the Raven King was. I haven’t started the series yet, but it’s definitely falling low on my TBR now. I don’t like when series finales don’t meet the hype of the first books 🙂
I HAVE been meaning to watch Call the Midwife! Now I have even more reason to try ❤
    Happy Reading 😀

You’re the second person I’ve heard say they were dissatisfied with The Raven King and I’ve just started going through my comments. Oh boy! Sorry it let you down. Happy reading and thanks for participating in WWW Wednesday!

I hope you’ll be able to continue with A Gathering Of Shadows soon! While I still prefer the first book, the sequel is definitely really good as well. And you’re not the first to be disappointed by The Raven King, so now I’m a bit afraid to continue the series… I hope you’ll enjoy your books this week!

    Happy reading! Here’s my WWW.
