I’m not 100% sure that my choice for the mirth part of Mirth and Music Monday this week will actually work outside of the context of the TV episode that it’s in, but I’m hopeful. This is from a classic Australian TV show from the 80s and early 90s called Mother & Son. Garry McDonald played Arthur Beare, who cares for his aging mother Maggie (played by Australian veteran of stage and screen, Ruth Cracknell). Maggie is beginning to suffer from dementia, and Arthur’s patience is constantly tested, though it’s always clear that he loves her deep down and only wants what’s best for her. There are some full episodes on YouTube (half an hour each); if you enjoy this, I recommend checking them out.

An instrumental version of this song was used in the opening credits of Mother & Son. It’s a sweet, old-timey song.

That was bittersweet. My grandma had Alzheimer’s so I was reminded of her.

I find every episode equal parts funny and heartbreaking for exactly the same reason.
